Wine Bars in Croatia: Wine and Cheese Bar Trapula in Pag

The island of Pag is well-known among the party-goers, since Zrće beach is among the most popular party-all-summer-long destinations in Europe. If you are, however, not into that party scene, there’s still plenty to enjoy on the island, and for the wine-lover tourists a wine and cheese bar called Trapula (the word means “the mousetrap” in the local dialect, so, don’t get surprised with all the mouse design elements in the bar) was opened in 2015 by Matko Kovačević, who still runs it. It has now endured 2 tourist seasons (the wine bar is open during the tourist season and closed during the winter; this year they opened in early June so we can expect the bar to open around that time next year as well), located in the centre of the old Pag town, right across the street from the wonderful romanesque St. Mary’s church.

The bar wine offer has grown (and also got modified) quite significantly between the two seasons, and in 2016 they offered over 40 different wine labels in the bar, with almost 20 of them being offered by the glass. Some of the Croatian labels offered are Tomac, Kabola, Jokić, Korlat, Bibich, Degarra, Vrsaljko, Škaulj and others. Many of those winemakers are from the Zadar region, so we can say that the wine selection is mostly dedicated to the local wines. There is, however, a great selection of imported wines as well, especially Italian, if you just want to take a break from all of those wonderful Croatian varieties.

In addition to wines, the bar offers quite a selection of tapas, several cheeses (the island of Pag is actually well known for their wonderful cheese), several types of charcuterie served with two types of olives. They also included omelettes into their breakfast offer – obviously they take good care of their guests in the morning, as well as in the evening.

There’s also a gastro and souvenir shop within Trapula, and there you can buy some of the wines as well as other goodies you can taste in Trapula, such as San Servolo craft beers from Istria and various liquors and honey.
