Croatia-USA Double Taxation Still a Burning Issue

June the 24th, 2024 – The Croatia-USA double taxation issue is still a problem for business between the two nations, as no agreement has yet been put into force.

As Mladen Miletic/Poslovni Dnevnik writes, more than a year and a half after it was signed, the agreement on avoiding burdensome Croatia-USA double taxation not only failed to ever enter into force, but the ratification procedure didn’t even begin over in the USA.

For this reason, American congresswoman and co-chair of the Croatian Congressional Club Nanette Barragán, together with her colleague Dave Joyce and vice-presidents Dan Kildee and Claudia Tenney, sent a letter to the Senate in which they appealed to cooperate with the Croatian Ministry of Finance in order to solve the problems that may be hindering the agreement and to finally ratify it.

This agreement will make it easier and more profitable for companies from both sides of the pond to do business with each other and encourage new investments.

“Croatia is a key ally of the USA, and the Senate must cooperate with the Ministry of Finance to solve this problem and the procedure leading to the ratification of the agreement. The Croatia-USA double taxation agreement is based on 30 years of diplomatic partnership, it will further deepen cooperation between our nations and will serve the interests of both American and Croatian taxpayers. This opportunity to strengthen social, economic and cultural partnerships with Croatia is vital for the United States and my district,” wrote Congresswoman Nanette Barragán.

She is otherwise a member of the Democrats and represents a part of southern California, which, among other areas, covers San Pedro, where a large number of Americans of Croatian origin live.

US Undersecretary for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment Jose W. Fernandez and Croatian Finance Minister Marko Primorac jointly signed a comprehensive income tax agreement between the US and Croatia in Washington back in early December 2022. As stated, nothing has been done in reality on that issue.
