June the 26th, 2024 – The popular Croatian Entrio platform is conquering new markets and spreading its wings. A recent cash injection of nine million euros has seen it catapulted forward.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Josipa Ban writes, the Croatian Entrio platform for the sale and purchase of tickets recently got a spring in its step in the form of a large investment. This cash injection should enable the company to consolidate its position as the strongest platform on the Southeastern European market in terms of the number of events and tickets sold. That investment came from venture capital fund Invera Equity Partners (Invera EP) in the amount of nine million euros.

After a careful look deeper into the Croatian Entrio platform, which boasts business numbers that have been continuously growing for the last three years, the managers of the fund best known for investing in the Museum of Illusions, concluded that Entrio is a company worth investing in and that it should bring them a good return.

The assessment shouldn’t come as much of a shock to anyone who has followed Entrio’s ambitious business path. In 13 years of operation, the domestic “ticketing” company has continuously invested in technological innovations that make it very attractive to organisers.

Investments in the Croatian Entrio platform’s development so far have amounted to around three million euros. Owing to that, they were able to expand to two new markets. In addition to the Croatian market, they entered that of Slovenia back in 2018, and Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2023. With this new cash injection, they have announced their planned expansion into new markets and further development.

“Given the amount of investment we received and a strong partner, we’ll certainly make significant progress in the coming years,” said Berislav Marszalek, founder and CEO of Entrio. He announced that they’re planning to start a much more aggressive penetration into the segment of large concerts. The Croatian Entrio platform was more focused on medium-sized events, festivals and conferences, while their competitor Eventim, owned by CTS Events from Austria, led the way when it came to large concerts.

the croatian entrio platform’s fourth investment

This is actually the fourth investment for Entrio. Until this last one, around 660,000 euros were invested in the company, through three rounds (in 2011, 2018 and then finally in 2021). The result of that investment has been quality service, support and products, according to Marszalek.

“That has always been, and will remain, our top priority. Today, our product is much more complex and detailed in most segments compared to that of our competition,” stated the founder and CEO of the company that developed the first self-service platform in the region. This means that organisers can control and monitor sales in real time and thus manage numerous parameters in a much better way,” explained Marszalek.

expansion, expansion, expansion…

With this latest generous investment of nine million euros, their plan is to expand to new markets across the rest of Southeast Europe. Despite that having been revealed, they don’t want to go into any details yet. On top of that, the Croatian Entrio platform will be further improved. Marszalek said that with the latest investment, he will work on solving the biggest challenge in the industry at the moment – that of the active and personalised promotion of events.

With this, Entrio will make a stronger step into the segment of active sales. Currently, Entrio, quite like most platforms for selling and buying tickets, was more focused on the realisation of sales. Promotion was the responsibility of the organiser, who also had the greatest responsibility for the success of the event. With its solution, Entrio should give organisers a new and powerful tool that will significantly help them in the area of event promotion.

600,000 users, and over a million tickets sold in 2023

In addition to all of the aforementioned, the Croatian Entrio platform should receive new functionalities that will enable organisers to maximise their sales and achieve better profits. “Entrio has 600,000 users on its platform, and last year alone we sold more than a million tickets. This is valuable data that we intend to use so that the organisers can make better decisions”, stated the founder of the company.

This new cash sum will also see Marszalek no longer the majority owner of Entrio. The majority owner will become Invera EP.

“Entrio shares a common denominator with the rest of our portfolio as a strong B2C brand with exceptional potential for scaling, which is one of our areas of expertise. Our experience in scaling such concepts has already brought excellent results on existing investments. We expect the same outcome with Entrio,” said Denis Sabolović, investment manager at the Invera EP fund, for which this is the fourth investment.

Marszalek added that their partnership negotiations took a year. “They won us over with their energy, knowledge, experience and the results they achieved. Now we have serious capital that will enable us to make strong moves on several fronts,” he said.

Entrio otherwise achieved a massive 1.65 million euros in revenue last year, representing growth of 55 percent. This year, according to Marszalek, they plan to grow by 50 to 60 percent, and increase their number of employees from the current 30 to 50 by the end of next year.

April the 16th, 2024 – The wildly popular Croatian Museum of Illusions has taken the world by storm with many of them popping up in all kinds of different countries. It isn’t stopping there, either.

As Josipa Ban/Poslovni Dnevnik writes, yet another Croatian Museum of Illusions, which is currently the largest in all of Europe, was opened in Copenhagen recently.

The globally recognised combination of the world of entertainment and education with a Croatian signature is located in the most popular street, Strøget, in the very centre of Copenhagen. The aforementioned Museum of Illusions is managed by the Croatian company Metamorfoza, which now boasts over 50 Museums of Illusions open across the world in its rich portfolio. The newly opened museum in Copenhagen spans an impressive 1,200 square metres and provides its visitors with more than 70 exciting and very attractive exhibits. Some of them are having their world premiere in this new complex in the Danish capital.

honouring danish culture and history

“Visitors will have the opportunity to stimulate their imaginations and activate their senses through completely new illusions that have links with the locality, or rather pay tribute to Danish culture and history. Climbing along the historic Copenhagen facade, visiting the completely new concept of a special Danish hot dog stand are now possible, but only in the newly opened Museum of Illusions in Copenhagen, where visitors will feel the presence of the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen in a very special way”, they revealed from the Croatian Museum of Illusions concept.

They added that the Vortex Dome, which plays with the dynamics of movement, as well as the Shade Illusion, which plays with shadows, will have their grand premiere among the exhibits. “Visitors to the Museum of Illusions in Copenhagen will certainly not be deprived of the beloved and very popular illusions such as the Walk-in-Kaleidoscope and the so-called infinite room. This new Danish Museum of Illusions in is accompanied by some more innovation; the possibility of visiting the largest museum shop with a new concept and the largest assortment yet. It’s a unique opportunity for all visitors to the Museum of Illusions in Copenhagen to take home a piece of this truly incredible experience in a mini edition of illusions as a souvenir,” they pointed out.

learning through fun is the key to success for the Croatian museum of illusions

Teo Širola is the director of Metamorfoza, the Croatian company based in Zagreb that owns the franchise and manages the global network of the Museum of Illusions and is behind the brand across Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. Teo stated that their premise is learning through fun. “With yet another museum opening, we’ve confirmed that it has been well received elsewhere across the world. We worked extremely hard and for a long time on this project. The opening of the Museum of Illusions in Copenhagen enables visitors to another European metropolis to get to know this amazing and original Croatian concept through seeing the fascinating exhibits and enjoying an unforgettable experience,” said Širola.

He noted that they’re continuing to expand the Croatian Museum of Illusions concept, but with a special focus on corporate and private Museums of Illusion, such as the one just opened in Copenhagen. “Currently, according to this model, we manage a total of six of them, in Charlotte, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Denver and New York. The largest corporate Museum of Illusions in the world is the one opened last summer in Las Vegas, and the European one is now in Copenhagen,” pointed out Širola.

the largest chain of private museums on earth

Zarko Basic/PIXSELL

The Museum of Illusions is otherwise the largest chain of private museums in the entire world, with over 50 locations in 25 countries and 10 million visitors whose illusions and exhibits are created in Croatia by the development and research team in Oroslavje.

“We’ve got no plans for this incredibly globally successful and fast-growing project to stop at these numbers. Considering the current foray into the USA, the Metamorfoza team is planning to open an extension to its Zagreb office there soon for the sake of the easier management of all of our museums”, announced the Museum of Illusions.

This innovative Croatian museum concept was conceived on the idea of the founders and owners of the Museum of Illusions in Zagreb, Tomislav Pamuković and Roko Živković.

March the 24th, 2024 – A brand new Marriott International hotel is set to open its doors on gorgeous Cres island in June this year.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, in the middle of June this year, Croatia is set to get its very first hotel from the Autograph Collection brand, which is part of the prestigious Marriott International. This well known and respected brand manages more than 280 hotels across 50 different countries.

The new Marriott International hotel will be located on Cres island in an impressive marine and forest environment. Behind the investment itself, worth more than 15 million euros, is the company Valdarke d.o.o., at the helm of which is Nikola Avram. Avram himself is from Cres island and has more than twenty years of international experience in the hotel industry, as well as in management positions of some of the most reputable tourist companies.

Avram is also the founder of the successful regional company Alpha Hotel Management, which is licensed by Marriott International for brand development in Southeastern Europe.

“This is for all of Croatia”

“The very arrival of the Autograph Collection hotel, which is categorised with five stars and belongs to the premium distinctive group of Marriott hotels, is news in itself. This is especially the case given that this brand is making its debut on the Croatian market. In addition to promoting a micro-destination in terms of tourism, we are doing this for the whole of Croatia. We’re aware of the exceptional demand for quality hotel facilities and proven brands”, revealed Avram.

“We can’t and do not want to just stop at just the mere brand. The fact that we’re a big global brand doesn’t mean much if we don’t manage it superbly. It’s precisely for this reason that we’re trying to hire as many local workers as possible, even though we’re familiar with the trends in the movement of the labour force in Croatia. In this sense, we’ve provided truly respectable working conditions in all positions, as befits such a hotel chain,” Avram stated.

The anticipated start of work is at the beginning of May, with the official opening of the hotel having been announced for the middle of June this year. All waiters will be provided with accommodation, food and a salary of up to 1,500 euros. The hotel will only not be open during January and February, and future waiters are guaranteed six months of work with the possibility of permanent employment.

The advantage of Cres island as a destination, Autograph Collection points out, is that it is fantastically connected to important airports and cities. The secret is that sailing from Krk to Cres island takes only about twenty minutes, and Krk is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so that, for example, people can get from Zagreb to Cres in about two hours.

The Autograph Collection resort soon set to grave Cres island will boast 49 rooms, two outdoor pools, a beach area with a bar, an exceptional gastronomic offer and a wellness centre.

The exterior of the hotel has been carefully designed in a modern manner, while the interior is inspired by the relaxed atmosphere of the stone villages and colourful houses on the waterfront of Cres island. These charming buildings have retained the influence of Venetian architecture throughout the centuries. Energy-efficient design, the significant use of stone, wood and other natural materials throughout the hotel will create a beautiful ambience, a soothing atmosphere and an authentic touch that will convey the local message of Cres, one of the most beautiful Croatian islands of all.

February the 4th, 2024 – The Croatian company DOK-ING has produced a machine which can create hydrogen from organic waste material.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, one of the most important environmental questions of the moment is how we might dispose of waste without endangering human health. We’re also dealing with the very sharp division between those who are in favour of the thermal gasification of almost all types of waste, and those who would much prefer composting. It’s among the most burning issues plaguing Croatian cities, with Zagreb at the forefront.

One of the innovative solutions that received the green light from the EU is currently being offered almost right in front of our noses. The remarkable Croatian company DOK-ING, in cooperation with the Faculty of Civil Engineering, has created a “device for the production of hydrogen from organic residual material”, as reported by HRT.

We take everything that is unusable and create new value from it – energy” says the Croatian company DOK-ING

“Everything that can be used, returned or restored according to the hierarchy of waste management – should be. We came up with a machine to transform landfills into something better than their current state. We take over and create new added value from so-called unusable items in the form of energy,” explained Vjekoslav Majetić of the Croatian company DOK-ING.

“We don’t use incinerators

“Incinerators are used in plants that reduce the mass of material by burning it during waste processing. Burning emits a lot of undesirable substances out into the environment, and our plant works on the principle of dry distillation. We heat up the organic material to a certain temperature, where it decomposes into solid and gaseous components through a thermo-chemical process. From that gaseous component, we end up with something that is “popular” today, and that’s hydrogen. We obtain that hydrogen from over 70% of these individual materials, which we can further use as fuel, or for anything else we might need,” explained Majetić.

Professor Dražen Vouk from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Zagreb added that the connection between academia and industry contributes to more efficient economic development.

“The Croatian company DOK-ING has recognised the capacities of the academic community and has actively cooperated with the University of Zagreb and its constituents for many years. Through the application of several scientific and research projects, it has encouraged further cooperation to try to contribute to the innovative development of new technologies through scientific and research work. One of them is this waste processing plant,” stated Vouk.

The role of the Faculty of Civil Engineering

“The role of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in collaboration with the Croatian company DOK-ING is to use gasification technology to process sludge from purification devices. This is a type of waste that causes a lot of concern, not only here in Croatia, but across the world,” explained the professor.

“The results of the scientific and research work that we’ve successfully implemented for four years in cooperation with DOK-ING indicates that a technological solution like this could significantly contribute to the more efficient disposal of this type of waste,” said Vouk, adding that the technology itself generates synthesis gas on one hand, and on the other hand, a solid residue.

There’s considerable interest, especially after the problems with Jakuševec

“Representatives of the City of Zagreb have shown interest, there were also representatives of green actions, there were people who understand that the problem of waste must be solved, there’s simply no other way. Everything that can’t be dealt with in any other way is dealt with through thermal treatment, but not by burning. Thermo-chemical treatment can be used, where we can dispose of this waste in an ecological way and turn it into a new energy source. There’s a lot of interest, especially after what happened with Jakuševec,” said Majetić.

A plant will soon be installed in a Croatian city

Majetić revealed that they received support from the EU, but they cannot ask for a certificate before setting up the plant.

“We received a permit from the Ministry of Environmental Protection, so we’ll be setting up a plant in a Croatian city very shortly,” he concluded.

November the 7th, 2023 – A talented Croatian team from the famed Ruđer Bošković Institute (IRB) could end up causing quite the significant shift in how electronic devices are developed.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Borivoje Dokler writes, a multidisciplinary Croatian team of researchers from the highly respected Ruđer Bošković Institute (IRB) could end up making a splash. The team, led by Dr. Katarina Marušić, have developed an innovative methodology for improving the properties and functions of material surfaces.

The application of this methodology could lead to a significant shift in the development of electronic devices going forward. It could also be the same case for sensors and biosensors, as well as in the fields of electro-catalysis and medicine.

The focus of this Croatian team’s complex research is on self-organised monolayers and their cross-linking into a nano-thick polymer coating. A self-assembled monolayer (SAM) is a thin layer of molecules that is self-assembled on the surface of another material.

We might imagine it as a layer with a thickness of only one molecule, which then acts as the architect of the entire piece of material. This means that the molecules in that layer arrange themselves in a highly organised structure, without the need for any additional aids.

“This kind of process of self-organisation enables the rapid and precise creation of nanostructures that are very useful in various sorts of technologies. The study of such layers has profound implications for the development of new applications, i.e. the functions of materials with improved or completely new properties. Think of it as materials that are super-resistant to external influences, highly selective or capable of precise interaction with biological cells. These are just a few of the extremely promising areas that research into self-organised monolayers opens up,” explained Dr. Marušić, a senior research associate in the Laboratory for Radiation Chemistry and Dosimetry of the IRB.

October the 26th, 2023 – The well known Lithuanian Nordcurrent Labs has invested in the Novska gaming studio, more precisely in the Croatian startup Misfit Village.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Josipa Ban writes, the Croatian startup Misfit Village from the Pismo Business Incubator has received an investment from no less than the Lithuanian Nordcurrent Labs. This investment will enable the release of their game called Go Home Annie, otherwise the largest project created within the Novska startup incubator. According to current announcements, the game should be available on the market as early as next year.

The horror adventure game Go Home Annie recently got a new trailer that showcases more of the details of this video game, and also confirms that the Croatian startup Misfit Village now has a publisher. The team led by Mladen Bošnjak has been working on the development of Go Home Annie for the past few years, and their work has clearly has its value recognised by the Lithuania-based Nordcurrent Labs.

A game set in the Žumberak mountains

The cooperation agreement was signed earlier this year, and the release of the video game was announced for 2024 on both PC and consoles. This is a new foreign investment in Start UP, which operates in the Novska Business Incubator (Pismo) powered by A1. Last year, their companies ranked a very impressive 5th in the Croatian gaming industry in terms of their combined revenue.

The action of this horror game takes place in a house in the area of the Žumberak mountains located in the world of the SCP Foundation. The main character is Annie, whose role the player assumes by testing paranormal entities, solving different puzzles and exploring various paths to reach their end goal.

“We’re big fans of the fiction that has been created in the SCP Universe over the years and we wanted to offer our own contribution through this game,” said Mladen Bošnjak, the director of the Croatian startup Misfit Village.

“Don’t worry if you are not familiar with SCP fiction, because Go Home Annie offers an independent horror adventure that will raise the hairs on the neck of every single horror fan,” claimed Bošnjak, who signed the cooperation agreement with Nordcurrent Labs this year and thus ensured the release of the video game. More promising for the Croatian gaming scene yet, according to the million views on social media, it is being keenly awaited by a very large number of players.

Nordcurrent’s first Croatian investment

Nordcurrent Labs is otherwise part of the well-known and wider Nordcurrent Group, which publishes mobile games, and is headquartered in Lithuania. The subsidiary Nordcurrent Labs has released five extremely popular video games to date, and this is their first investment in a company headquartered in the Republic of Croatia. “We were immediately blown away by the imagination and execution of Go Home Annie,” said Andrius Mackevičius, head of publishing at Nordcurrent Labs. “It quickly became clear to us that Misfit Village are in fact crazy geniuses who understand horror well and have an original way of looking at a genre that is otherwise full of surprises, enthusiasm and creative energy,” they stated from Nordcurrent Labs.

Pismo has around 80 companies operating out of it

The Novska based Pismo Business Incubator (powered by A1) has been in function for the past five years, with around 80 companies operating out of it. The much anticipated video game Go Home Annie is one of the largest projects created so far in this, otherwise the fastest growing Croatian business incubator.

August the 29th, 2023 – The popular Croatian A1 has presented its list of new services on offer, and it has made the largest investment in the company’s history.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Tanja Ivancic writes, this year, A1 Croatia/Hrvatska will invest a massive 200 million euros in the modernisation of the network and IT infrastructure. As previously touched on, this is the biggest investment by far since they have been operating in the Republic of Croatia, according to Jiří Dvorjančanský, President of the Management Board.

“We’re halfway through the year, and we have already recorded 152 million euros poured into investments, that’s equal to 280 percent more than back during the same period last year,” added J. Dvorjančanský. He added that the Croatian A1 currently has the largest number of gigabit fixed connections in the entire country, as many as 711 thousand in total, and by the end of this year, there will be 800 thousand of them.

With the continuation of the construction of 150 thousand new connections, by the year 2025, Croatian A1 gigabit internet will be available in more than one million households nationwide, which is 70 percent of all households within the Republic of Croatia.

Extensive research

When it comes to the Croatian A1 mobile network itself, Dvorjančanský explained that with the modernisation and construction of the 5G network, 87 percent of the domicile population has been covered, and by the end of the year, that amount will rise to a very impressive 90 percent.

The Croatian A1 also presented its research, which was carried out by the Kvaka agency on a sample of 500 respondents. “That research confirmed that 91 percent of our users consider a high-quality WiFi signal in the home to be particularly important. In addition, 85 percent of users want the freedom and flexibility to change their TV packages once a month free of charge, while 83 percent of those surveyed want to transfer their TV service to other locations,” said Ivana Marković, chief director for private users. She also added that 79 percent of respondents expressed their desire to try new services without needing to accept any contractual obligations, with the possibility to cancel them at any time.

New Croatian A1 services

Based on that research, A1 created a set of services. From now on, they reported, “a speed of 2 Gbps will be made available within our fixed network with premium equipment that will be installed by A1 technicians. Advanced customer support is available with which requests will be resolved without anyone needing to wait around. The TV service has become portable and can be watched in other locations or on two TV devices. As for our business users, our new service concept will be presented in about a month.

August the 17th, 2023 – Zadar County entrepreneurship is doing well, and is currently ranked as being in seventh place in comparison to other Croatian counties.

When we hear about Croatian entrepreneurship, we typically think of continental Croatia and particularly Zagreb. That isn’t always the case, however, as entrepreneurship has been on the increase across Dalmatia in more recent years. The wider Zadar area stands out in this regard quite strongly.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, last year in Zadar County, at least according to the number of processed annual financial statements, 5,991 enterprises had their headquarters located in that Dalmatian city’s wider region. They also had 27,598 employees on their books, which is an increase of 7.1% when it comes to the number of employees compared to 2021.

Encouraging figures from the world of Zadar County entrepreneurship

Last year, Zadar County entrepreneurship was on the up, with companies based in the county achieving impressive total revenues in the amount of 22.4 billion kuna (a 27.6% increase when compared to 2021), total expenses of 20.1 billion kuna (representing a 22.4% increase), profit amounting to 2.7 billion kuna (82.0% more), losses of 613.5 million (23.6% more) and net profits of 2.1 billion kuna (a 111.7% increase in comparison to to 2021) .

Among those companies based in Zadar County, Aluflexpack Novi from Poličnik stands out the most for its results. Back in 2022, this Zadar-based company achieved the highest total revenues (1.7 billion kuna), employed the largest number of people, 686 of them in total, and was 2022’s the largest exporter with 1.4 billion kuna in exports alone. The largest profit from back during period was reported by the company Tankerska plovidba from Zadar in the amount of 791.5 million kuna.

Zadar County entrepreneurship stands out among other counties

Compared to other counties, Zadar County entrepreneurship ranks in a very impressive seventh place in terms of the number of companies it has based there. It’s also in tenth place in terms of its reported total revenues, ninth in terms of the number of employees it has working for these companies, and sixth in terms of realised net profit.

July the 27th, 2023 – The Croatian platform Flaster is expanding its reach to new markets. It is also expecting increased levels of interest from investment funds.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Marija Crnjak writes, the innovative Croatian platform Flaster, for mobile measurable advertising, is now expanding to new markets and plans to be present in all European Union countries within 5 years. On top of that impressive feat, investment funds have also shown increased interest in investing in Flaster in the next cycle, Flaster co-founder Filip Carić revealed recently.

This startup was only launched in 2021

This startup was initially launched in 2021 and is the first and so far entirely unique media company specialising in measurable outdoor mobile advertising in the European Union.

The Croatian platform Flaster started out with branded taxi vehicles, and their currently plan is to expand to other mobile targets, as well as to other EU countries. After Croatia and neighbouring Slovenia, this spring, they started expanding into the market of Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and other countries located within Central and Eastern Europe.

Expansion plans are heading in two directions

“We started out with taxis because we saw that we could provide a multi-channel experience to passengers and provide companies with a simple way to rent media. We then quickly recognised that there are many other types of mobile advertising spaces that could be used in the same way. Furthermore, we plan to expand in two directions, the first goal is to strengthen the teams we have in these countries where we already operate, and then to expand to foreign markets, where the plan is to be present in all EU countries in 5 years.

After that, we want to become a leader in mobile advertising, where we would develop a platform where we would enable various types of mobile surfaces to become a medium for advertising,” explained Filip Carić.

200 active vehicles in 12 cities in 3 nations

At the moment, the Croatian platform Flaster has over 200 active vehicles in 12 cities in three countries and over 500 registered drivers in their database who are waiting for an opportunity for their advertisement. So far, the drivers’ reactions have been very positive, because Flaster provides them with a direct source of simple passive income.

Advertisers have a strong interest as well, as evidenced by the figures showing a 150 percent increase in revenue so far compared to the whole of last year, with advertisers not only extending their contracts, but increasing their budgets and the number of cities.

This time last year, the Croatian platform Flaster was present in a total of five cities, meaning that growth has been exponential. Carić noted that they are not afraid of rapid growth, because the entire model is set up so that opening new markets will be easy.

The hunt for acquisitions

“There is an offer, in this current model it is taxis and ride-share vehicles, and we also have clients who are regional and who have the possibility to transfer the activation of cooperation to new markets. In addition to that, at this moment in time, we’ve already started talking to various investment funds that have an interest in getting involved in our unfolding story,” Carić concluded.
