Rajska plaža (Lopar)

Due to its popularity, you can expect there to be plenty of facilities and activities on the island to enjoy. Rajska plaža has everything from beach volleyball to water slides, parasailing, and after beach parties. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants to enjoy.

Another beach located in Lopar worth a mention is Sahara beach, about a 30 minute walk from Rajska plaža on marked trails through nature. Sahara beach is a stunning sandy beach that is also one of the most popular nudists beach in the region. Accessible by car, Sahara is also a great place for adventuring, but not so great for activities. If you’re looking for something with water sports, Sahara is not the place for you. Here you can enjoy peace and quiet, and due to the lack of facilities, be sure to bring your own food and water. This sandy beach is surrounded by a few shrubs where you can find cover for when the sun gets too hot.

ciganka (lopar)

Also based in Lopar facing north we have Ciganka, which actually translates to the English word “gypsy”. One of the three clothing-optional sandy beaches in Lopar, Ciganka is known for its bizarre and unique sand pyramids and other natural formations on the beach. The color of the sea here is emerald green, and there is plenty of room for you to sunbathe on the rocky plateaus that surround the beach. You can reach Ciganka easily by foot or by car, and you’ll be sure to find parking in the nearby pine forest. A very isolated beach with a lack of facilities, make sure you prepare before your day here!

pudarica (barbat)

A beach made for the spectacular views of the Rab old town and even better sunsets, Pudarica beach is located in Barbat in the south of the island. One of the 5 best beaches on Rab island by far, it is characterized by its fine sand granules and its crystal clear sea, Pudarica is easily reached by car (free parking) or by boat. Equipped with fast food, cafes, and toilets, Pudarica beach also has one of the most famous nightclubs on the island: Santos Beach Club (see on map). One of the best parts of Pudarica beach is the “blue lagoon”, located just two bays over from the main beach – be sure to explore the many hidden beaches and bays here!

kandarola (frkanj)

One of the oldest known nudist beaches in the world, we introduce you to Kandarola. Located on the Frkanj peninsula just a short taxi boat ride from the port of the old town of Rab or a short drive from Palit, Kandarola hosted guests such as King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson. This beach is one of the best beaches on Rab island and is well equipped with restaurants, beach bars, lounge chairs and umbrella rentals, clean toilets, and showers. Another perk? Kandarola also reserves part of the beach for dogs!

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Milan returned home to Croatia after living and working in Germany for eleven years. He moved his family and construction company to his native town of Imotski, in the rugged Dalmatian hinterland.

“It’s definitely a final thing. I missed my homeland, Imotski, Zagreb… all of that so much, and I want to be there now. It isn’t necessarily that Croatia has improved so much, it’s more than Germany is collapsing. Salaries increased by 10 to 15 percent, but alongside that, everything became abnormally expensive,” stated Milan Katanušić for RTL.

Among the Croats in Germany not planning to return home is Marija from Zagreb, who has been living in Munich for a decade now and plans to stay there. In addition to having a good and secure job in finance, she and her colleagues also developed a mobile application (app) with advice for those moving to Germany.

“I finished college in Germany, started a family, started two businesses… If someone had asked me where I would be ten years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to say with certainty that it would be Germany,” stated Marija Šimić.

“There are still plenty of Croats in Germany, but many can’t live there with their average German pensions, so it’s a little easier for them to go back to Croatia at that point,” explained Katanušić.

For the first time in a decade, more Croats emigrated from Germany than immigrated

Last year, far fewer foreigners immigrated to Germany than in previous years, and the number of Croatian citizens who immigrated to Germany fell for the first time, the Federal Statistical Office announced. “Germany recorded a decline in the number of immigrants last year. While 2,665,772 foreigners arrived in Germany in 2022, last year that number stood at 1,932,509,” the Federal Statistical Office claimed in a statement.

At the same time, considering that 1,269,545 foreigners emigrated from Germany, the net number of immigrants fell to 662,964, which is a noticeable drop compared to 2022, when the net number of immigrants was 1,462,089.

This decline is primarily associated with the record number of refugees from Ukraine who immigrated to Germany back in 2022, and whose number dropped significantly in 2023.

For the first time since Croatia’s entry into the European Union (2013), in 2023, more Croats emigrated from Germany than immigrated to it. That means that last year, 20,604 Croats immigrated to Germany, which is the lowest number since 2013, when Croatia acquired full EU membership. Last year, 24,241 Croats emigrated from Germany, which means that in 2023, the number of Croats living in Germany dropped by a significant 3,637.

A total of 434,035 Croats were registered as living in Germany at the end of 2023. A few years earlier, in 2016, 332,605 Croats were registered in Germany.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the chairman of the Parliamentary Defence Committee, SDP’s Arsen Bauk, HDZ’s Ante Deur, and military analyst Professor Marinko Ogorec spoke on HRT about the re-introduction of Croatian national service from January the 1st, 2025.

Bauk claimed that Croatia still sticks tightly to the concept of having a professional army. As he stated, after completing their training, some soldiers who want to remain in the armed forces can and do stay, and the rest will continue with their civilian lives with certain very valuable knowledge that they will acquire in a mere two or three month period.

When asked how many young people could end up having to do Croatian national service each year and whether the country actually has the capacity for their proper training, Deur replied that the capacities are indeed there.

“I believe that we’ve got quality officers and non-commissioned officers, we’ve got barracks that are good and there’s no fear or worries as far as that is concerned. The Croatian Armed Forces has its own system of work and there’s no doubt that it will be of good quality and in the interest of the military, but also of interested young people.”

Ogorec believes that it has become evident that Croatian national service should not have been frozen previously because when some skills aren’t applied for a long time, then certain serious problems arise.

“It would be good if Croatian national service had remained as it is. The OSRH has five and a half months to start new active military service, and we’ll see how that will be implemented,” he said. He emphasised that 2-3 months is enough for basic training.

Bauk pointed out that the activation of Croatian national service should affect the increase in the number of professional soldiers the country has. “That’s one of the things that the government and the competent ministry should explain better, as well as the actual reason national service is now being unfrozen”, he said.

He said that the Defence Committee hasn’t yet had a single meeting regarding this issue because, as he stated, such is the dynamics of the government. “What’s being circulated in the media is “quite enough”. My colleague Deur and I will spend more time on talk shows discussing national service than soldiers will actually spend doing it,” he said.

Bauk noted that in voluntary Croatian national service, the number of conscripts who would actually end up joining the armed forces at the end was a missing point.

“Involving a larger number of young men and women would increase the opportunity for them to become members of the Croatian Armed Forces after their training is complete,” he said.

The president said that Croatia is currently lacking 4,000 soldiers, and nobody has ever come forward and denied that fact. “There are more non-commissioned officers and officers in the army than there are actual soldiers. These are topics that should be taken into account,” he said.

As for civilian military service, Deur emphasised that the ministry will decide how it will all be done. He’s aware that this is important information and assured viewers that it “will be properly communicated in good time”

Back in 2008, as many as 90 percent of young people appealed to their conscience and did Croatian national service. The question arises as to whether or not today’s young people would respond to being called up for national service or whether we’ll be surprised and have a repeat of 2008.

“There are cases where an individual doesn’t want to pick up a weapon due to their own conscience, but this doesn’t limit them in any other matter. I don’t see why such an individual wouldn’t put on a uniform and serve in the army with their colleagues,” he emphasised.

He added that within the army, there is a whole range of activities that these people can perform that don’t involve weaponry.

As for mandatory Croatian national service for both women and men, Ogorec believes that it should be so, and that women shouldn’t be spared from being called up. “I see no reason why women shouldn’t serve in the military,” he emphasised, adding that women will also be completely able to apply to the new system. He pointed out that there were many women who participated in combat activities during the Homeland War, and so gender shouldn’t be a hindrance.

Croatia’s Manjgura public relations agency has just won the prestigious IPRA GWA (International Public Relations Association Golden World Awards) for 2024 in the public sector category. It was won for their campaign and work entitled: “Justice Served: Historic Rise of Judges’ Salaries”.

It was otherwise a a multi-month campaign in 2023/2024. during which Manjgura provided communication support to the Association of Croatian Judges, and to the project that culminated in the largest increase in judges’ salaries in recent Croatian history.

Known as the global PR Oscars of sorts, the IPRA Golden World Awards competition was launched back in 1990 and has continuously encouraged excellence in the PR industry ever since. This year, at the world’s oldest competition in the field of public relations, 48 ​​jury members evaluated a multitude of applications from all over the world, within 38 categories.

The IPRA GWA is Manjgura’s third award for a project with the Association of Croatian Judges. It’s worth noting that back in June, the agency received two Polaris awards in London. These are prestigious global awards for political communication. Manjgura’s team in the campaign for UHS consisted of founder and director Krešimir Macan, senior adviser Anamarija Hrvoić Đurić and junior adviser Dora Novak.

“I’d like to offer my congratulations to the Association of Croatian Judges for their determination and courage to correct a long-standing injustice in the disparity of salaries in public services. I’d also like to extend those congratulations to our team from Manjgura. They achieved a historic result through a ten-month, extremely intensive and dynamic campaign and once again showed how important clear and timely communication is in every single sector. The individual approach and comprehensive solutions that Manjgura offers to clients proved to be a winning combination this time as well,” said Krešimir Macan, thanking the IPRA GWA expert jury for their trust and recognition.

The IPRA GWA is Manjgura’s fourth prestigious award this year alone. As a reminder, back in April, Manjgura first won the only gold in the competition of the fourteen Grand PRIX finalists of the Croatian Public Relations Association. They did so with the conference called: “Sales Mindset: The Wolf Strikes Again,” for their client, Prodajni Mindset. The most significant Croatian recognition for communication experts for innovation and expertise in project implementation was won in the category of Event organisation and communication, with a conference at which former broker and real Wolf of Wall Street Jordan Belfort shone as the main star on November the 17th, 2023 in Zagreb. With that same project, Manjgura made it to the IPRA finals in the Events category.

We can’t go without mentioning the fact that the final judging of this year’s prestigious award in the field of public relations – IPRA GWA, was held for the first time right here in in Croatia, more precisely in Zagreb. It was hosted by Manjgura, whose founder and director Krešimir Macan also participated as a member of the jury. This represents a great success for the Croatian PR scene, as his colleague Marina Bolanča Radunović from the ABC communication agency was also on the jury. Macan and Bolanča didn’t judge in the categories in which their agencies were the finalists. In addition to their hard work for the Association of Croatian Judges, this year the IPRA jury awarded another eight campaigns from Croatia (10 golds in total for 9 campaigns), and in addition to the 16 IPRA GWAs won in Croatia so far – this means that there have been 26 world golds awarded to the Croatian PR scene since 2015.

Sakarun, also known as Saharun, is located on the north side of the island in the Zadar archipelago. What sees this ranked among the best beaches on Dugi otok is the fact that it is… sandy! It’s beautiful white sand coupled with a sea bright with blues has given this beach the reputation as one of the best. Sakarun beach itself is 800 meters long with some parts only 3.5 meters deep, a shallowness perfect for children and families. The beach is surrounded by thick pine trees to escape the sun, and offers two catering facilities perfect for summertime refreshments. Lounge chairs and umbrellas are available to rent, and a miniature train runs the 4 kilometer stretch from Božava to Sakarun daily in the summer.

Veli Žal

Situated in the Northern part of the island, Veli Žal is located just opposite of Mežanj island, about 5.6 kilometers from village Dragove and 10 kilometers from Brbinj. A beach that is a combination of fine white sand and small pebbles, some parts of the sea are rocky where others have sandy bottoms. Veli Žal measures over a kilometer in length and has zero facilities other than a rustic beach bar that is convenient for ice cream, cold drinks, and some Croatian sweets. The colors of the sea are a rich blue-green, and it is not uncommon to see dolphins swimming in the distance, that alone makes it among the best beaches on Dugi otok. A beach only partially shaded by thick pine, Veli Žal does have parking located near the beach.

Another beach that is also worth mentioning is the gorgeous Veli Rat. It is located in the northernmost part of the island in Čuna Bay. Veli Rat is famous for their lighthouse, which is surrounded by pebbled beaches, beautiful bays, and thick shaded pine trees. In the vicinity of the lighthouse you will find two small pebbled beaches suitable for children, and a further walk out you’ll be greeted with a rocky coastline. As there are campsites nearby, you can find a beach bar and some facilities. Easily accessible by car, you can also find plenty of parking under the pine trees out of the hot sun.

Brbinjšćica

Brbinjšćica is a bay located southwest of the town Brbinj, which is northeast on the island of Dugi Otok. Brbinjšćica bay is surrounded by mighty cliffs and numerous caves, and is one of the safest anchorages on Dugi Otok facing the open sea. A secluded bay known to the few who know how to locate it, Brbinjšćica is a great place for diving as well. Due to its isolation, there are no known facilities, so prepare while you’re in Brbinj for a truly secluded cave oasis at Brbinjšćica.

Lojišće

A hidden gem and truly unspoiled we have Lojišće beach, located at the very southern tip of the Salt Lake “Mir”. A sandy beach, Lojišće is usually very quiet and perfect for an overnight stay. There are no known facilities here – the perfect paradise for isolation and peace.

When you think of cable cars in Croatia, your mind likely goes straight to the one in Dubrovnik, and then to the one which took forever to come to be (and still has its issues), in Zagreb. One takes you up Srdj, and the other up Sljeme. You likely don’t think of Rabac, but you’d be wrong not to!

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, local people in Rabac are quick to point out that they actually had a cable car almost half a century before Zagreb did.

“Ours was for mining. It was nine kilometres long and transported bauxite from the mines down there to the port. It was mostly used a very long time ago, back during the war in Abyssinia,” Rabac locals say, pointing to the Teleferik, a monument to their long industrial history.

“The first tourists to come to Rabac from abroad were Czechs. We even have a part of the forest called “Prohaska”, they also had a summer house here, and I also remember those very first German tourists,” stated Mladen Juričić Fritz (68), a well-known restaurateur from Rabac for Vecernji, before adding:

“I was eleven years old. It was the summer of 1967, and the tourists slept in my childhood bedroom! They were Germans, at that time, looking at their paying power, they were like spacemen for us locals. When they went home, they would take the whole family with whom they were spending the summer – to dinner! Those were the days. Back during that time, my house was the last one above the road, and today there are hundreds around it, there’s hardly any empty land left for building. There was no road then, only four cars in the village – three white sedans and the neighbour’s blue Opel Rekord. Many years later, I drove my wife Mira to the maternity ward to give birth in it,” revealed Fritz.

He also explained how the miners used to come on holiday to Rabac.

It’s cheerful today in Rabac both during the day and in the evening hours. This area’s strong points are certainly its high-category hotels. There’s even a hotel specially designed for children – Maro. There’s also great food in a number of restaurants. In winter there are maybe 1,500 people living in Rabac, and in summer – there are ten more tourists for every resident.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Bruno Lipej writes, the Croatian Vetti Group acquired a total of 13 members in the first 15 months of operation, and the opening of a 24/7 veterinary hospital in Split has also been announced.

After the opening of Buba by Vetti Group, the largest 24/7 private veterinary clinic in Zagreb in December last year, the group was joined in March by Split Veterinary practice for small animals – SplitVet. SplitVet is specialised in orthopedics. They were also joined by Veterinary station ZAG-VET d.o.o. from Zlatar, which consists of a small and a large practice, a pharmacy and the associated “Luč Zagorje” animal shelter.

Just one month later, more specifically back in April this year, Pet-Vet, a specialist veterinary clinic for small animals from Split, and Zagreb Veterinary Station d.o.o. were also acquired. The latter boasts clinics and pharmacies in as many as five locations across the City of Zagreb. The Ogulin Veterinary Clinic and the Gornja Bebrina Veterinary Clinic also joined the group.

With the aforementioned new acquisitions, the Croatian Vetti Group can boast of more than 230 employees in 26 locations.

Dozens of magical smaller and larger bays are located on the westernmost part of this area, making it difficult to pick the best beaches on the Makarska Riviera. The majority can be reached by boat or by car from Brela, with parking provided on a dirt road that passes through a part of the area, while the most distant bays of Vruja can be reached only on foot. For a large part of the season, these beaches are nudist, while during the high tourist season both clothed and nudist swimmers gather there.

This is a very popular area of Baška Voda which borders the beautiful pebbly beaches of Brela Berulia on the western side, and extends all the way to the centre of Baška Voda on the east. For a number of years, here you can find one of the first and the most popular beach bars of the Makarska Riviera, Južnjačka Utjeha (Southern Comfort), whose delicious summer music selection relaxes both the swimmers and tourists, both during the day and during the hot Adriatic nights.

The Nugal nudist beach is one of the most scenic pearls of the Makarska Riviera and is a very popular destination for swimming with tourists of all nationalities. Although it is not officially declared as 100 percent nudist (institutions should finally do their job for that to happen), it has always been dominated by nudists during all parts of the season. It is quite isolated and is completely in the wild area, so you can reach it only by boat or on foot from the direction of Makarska.

The Velika Duba beach in Živogošće is, together with Nugal in Makarska, certainly one of more picturesque on the whole Riviera. It is located completely outside of any built-up areas which it borders – Živogošće Blato and Živogošće Mala Duba – next to the pine forest, where during the times of the former Yugoslavia a nudist camp was located. Today, nudists use it only before and after the high tourist season, while during the peak season it is full of clothed bathers. It isn’t only among the best beaches on the Makarska Riviera, but it wins in terms of location, too. It is situated just below the famous Adriatic Highway (Jadranska Magistrala) and is easily accessible to swimmers.

gradac – vodice beach

Gradac is home to long sandy stretches which are more than worthy of being listed among the best beaches on the Makarska Riviera. The view from Vodice Beach towards the centre of the town is also truly idyllic. Especially at sunset! Colours which spill across the sky are simply stunning. The locals say that, on the whole Riviera, it is they who have the most beautiful sunset.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/Josipa Ban writes, by the year 2050, traffic fatalities should be reduced to zero as a result of planned Zagreb smart traffic solutions.

These plans are part of the very ambitious Vision Zero strategy, which is is the goal Zagreb will strive for and what is set out in the National Road Traffic Safety Plan. Although it may sound unrealistic to completely eliminate traffic accidents that end in death or serious injuries, the fact is that this country has a lot of room to reduce the number of accidents on the roads. That was echoed by the participants of a recently held meeting called “Vision Zero – safe, smart and sustainable mobility”.

The goal of this meeting, which is being held for the second time, is to draw the public’s attention to the key challenges and technological opportunities available in order to get closer to the Vision Zero concept, especially ahead of the large influx of traffic into the country each and every summer tourist season.

Two panels discussed how to ensure a better implementation of the Vision Zero strategy, i.e. a reduced number of fatalities on Croatian roads, and how technological solutions can contribute to increasing driving safety.

Plenty of emphasis was placed on investments, tech and other important solutions to make the traffic situation and the roads more safe.

“We have to start thinking more intensively about the steps that are crucial in the prevention of traffic accidents”, said Vladimir Nišević.

Andro Pavuna, head of the Zagreb City Office for Local Self-Government, Transport, Civil Protection and Security, said that he believes that the Zagreb smart traffic solutions envisioned as part of the Vision Zero concept can be achieved.

“Three key things will be crucial for this. These are prevention, infrastructure and supervision over the implementation and compliance with the rules,” stated Pavun, adding that technology will also play a big role in achieving Vision Zero’s goals.

It’s exactly this that the powers that be in the Croatian capital plan to implement as part of a proper Zagreb smart traffic solution. It involves the implementation of a project involving automatic or adaptive traffic management. Pavuna announced that they are currently finishing the tender for the project, which in its very first phase will be worth 13 million euros. A public procurement procedure announcement is therefore expected soon. It should enable a whole range of Zagreb smart traffic solutions, as all of the city’s traffic lights will be connected to one central place. This, in turn, will enable significantly better and more efficient traffic management.

“This is a very valuable project that we’ve phased and which will contribute to overall traffic safety in the capital city,” concluded Pavuna.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, on the show 24UR (24 Hours), which is broadcast daily on the Slovenian TV channel POP TV, a feature about prices on the Croatian coast was recently shown. More specifically, Slovenians have complained that summer holidays in neighbouring Croatia are now more expensive than in Spain, Portugal and Greece. Croatian prices, they noted, have risen significantly not only among accommodation providers and for food and drinks cafes, but also in shops.

As an example, they took the Bosnian influencer Mirza Mustafagić from Bosnia and Herzegovina, who announced on TikTok that he paid as much as 17 euros for some ice cream in Opatija. “After I saw how much ice cream costs in Opatija, I had to sit down,” said the influencer from Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose video on TikTok was viewed by almost one million people. Some agreed with him, others reminded him that said ice cream was purchased in a five-star hotel, and not “out in Opatija” as he packaged the situation.

This isn’t the only example of Slovenian TV and Slovenians in general coming down hard on Croatian prices. “A pancake with hazelnut spread, served on a plastic plate, on the Makarska Riviera will cost you five euros. If you want a sunbed and a parasol, you’re looking at paying 25 to 30 euros,” Slovenian TV stated.

“Not only are foreign visitors getting sick of this, but the Croats themselves are also slowly starting to have enough of it – they’re sick of having thinner wallets every single time they leave a shop. Everything is expensive, nothing has become cheaper,” added the Slovenians, after which they compared Croatian prices with other popular summer destinations across the Mediterranean, reports Večernji list.

“The German Federal Statistical Office has calculated that, for example, in Turkey they pay 41 percent less for a night in a hotel or a meal in a restaurant than at home, in Spain 26 percent, in Greece 23 percent.
