Driving from Osijek to the airport

The airport is 17km south of Osijek, on the road to Vukovar. Driving time with no traffic is about quarter of an hour.

Airport taxi options in Osijek

With the lack of bus options, the only option is by taxi. A taxi into town will cost in the region of 180 kuna.

However, taxis are not always available. I discovered this to my cost the last time I flew to Osijek from Split. With just 15 passengers on board and the only flight of the day, it was not sufficiently interesting for a taxi driver to meet the incoming flight.

Airport parking in Osijek

There are almost 300 parking spaces at the airport, so parking is never a problem. Simply take the ticket as you enter.  Then pay in the payment machine in the terminal building. Enter the paid ticket into the machine as you exit.

Payment is in cash. The first 15 minutes are free. After this, parking costs 10 kuna an hour for the first two hours, before becoming cheaper. A daily ticket will set you back 70 kuna. The airport website has a breakdown of all the parking prices.

History of Osijek’s airport

Initial plans to build an airport in Osijek date back to 1971, while the decision to proceed came in 1978. Construction began almost immediately, and the airport opened on May 31, 2018. The inaugural flight was to Zagreb, a route which soon became daily. Belgrade was added twice a week. Then seasonal routes to Pula, Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik connected Slavonia to the rest of the country.

A new cargo terminal in 1982 increased traffic considerably.  Former Yugoslavia traded air cargo with the likes of Libya, Egypt, Mongolia and India via Osijek. All was going well until the Homeland War. During this time, the airport was occupied, looted and destroyed. Total destruction was prevented by UN troops who were stationed there.

There was a temporary airport solution at the nearby Sports Airport Čepin in 1995. But operations returned to the main airport at Klisa in 2001.

For more information, visit the official airport website, which is only in Croatian, however.

Airport statistics for Pula

Of all the impressive passenger increases at Croatia’s airports in the last five years, perhaps the story of Pula is the most praiseworthy. Prior to Croatia’s EU entry in 2013, about 40% of Pula’s passenger traffic came from Russia. But this number was slashed when Croatia joined the EU, due to a new visa requirement.

During an interview with Svemir Radmilo, the director of the airport, for Google News back in May 2014, Radmilo explained to me the urgent need to diversity. And diversify he most certainly did. A quick look at the statistics of the last few years show traffic doubling. And with so many more European destinations now on offer, the choice of flights to Pula is much more attractive. You can follow the latest statistics on the airport website.

History of the airport in Pula

Pula’s airport dates back to 1911, when some pilots and engineers from the Austro-Hungarian army took to the air from a grass field. This is the present location of the airport.

Civilian flights began in 1924 with a seaplane service. Seaplanes reappeared briefly to Pula in 2015, but European Coastal Airlines stopped flights in 2016.

The current airport was turned over to civilian use back in 1967, and it proved very successful. 1987 saw Pula handle over 700,000 passengers, a number that would not be bettered until 2018.

As elsewhere in Croatia, the war years had a catastrophic effect on passenger numbers. There was also a change in the type of tourist using the airport after 1999. British and Western tourists became less prominent than those from Eastern Europe and countries of the Soviet Union. So much so, in fact, that Russians made up 40% of passengers by EU entry in 2013. As shown above, the new Russian visa requirements have resulted in a return to more British and Western tourists to Pula.

All you need to know about Rijeka Airport on the island of Krk: flights, transfers, bus routes, parking and a guide to the airport facilities.

Rijeka may not be the biggest airport in Croatia, but with some 3 million people within a 2-hour drive, as well as its status at the 2020 European City of Culture, it was becoming increasingly popular. Pula and Trieste are just an hour away, and 90 minutes will bring you to the capitals of Zagreb and Ljubljana. Venice and Zadar, Graz and Split – the geographical location is very favourable. Here is what you need to know about using Rijeka Airport.

Getting from the Airport to Rijeka by bus

Krk lies to the south of Rijeka, and bus transfers are quite painless. Departures go for the bus station on Jelačić Square, and the price is 55 kuna. The bus also connects the airport with Omišalj on Krk. The Omišalj bus station is in the centre (25 kuna). During the winter season, those shuttles operate only on-demand, and you have to make a reservation at least 24 hours before your flight on information@rijeka-airport.hr.

There is also a shuttle from the airport to Crikvenica, and ticket prices are 40 kuna.

Driving to Rijeka Airport

If you are driving from Rijeka, the journey takes about half an hour in clear traffic and 27km. Head on over the Krk bridge, and the airport is located nearby, about 3km from the bridge. For drivers from further afield, simply follow the motorway signs for Rijeka, before turning off for Krk and the airport before you reach the city.

Taxi and Uber Options from the airport in Rijeka

rijeka-airport-runway

Taking a taxi at a new location can be an expensive business if you are not prepared. The airport in Rijeka has helpfully published an official guide price of taxi fares to Rijeka and other destinations. Always agree the fare before you get in the taxi. It would also not be a bad idea to have this image below on hand. It will be harder for taxi drivers to overcharge you if you show them the official prices.

There is a taxi stand right in front of the airport, and only licenced taxi drivers may wait there.

Of course, if you don’t want to deal with the taxi issue, the global ride-sharing app, Uber, started its operations in Rijeka last year, as it continues its expansion in Croatia. Simply go to the app and order your ride, while saving a few kuna in the process.

Airport parking in Rijeka

Parking is no problem, and you can either pay cash at the automated payment station, or with credit and debit cards at the information centre. But be aware that after 20:00, the only option is at the payment station.

Frequent users can buy an annual prepaid ticket for 6,000 kuna (and 3,400 for 6 months). Most visitors, however, will be looking to take advantage of the short-stay options. The first 10 minutes are free, and the first hour is 15 kuna. After that, the price is 10 kuna an hour for the next two hours, and then 5 kuna an hour. Daily tickets are available for 80 kuna, and any additional day after the first one will cost you 50 kuna per day.

Who flies to Rijeka?

rijeka-airport-airlines

Before the pandemic, the times were good for the airport in Rijeka, as the city was selected to be the European City of Culture in 2020. Things didn’t quite go well for that celebration, as it coincided with the start of the pandemic. But, before all of that, Rijeka was connected by air with the following destinations: Berlin, Cagliari, Dubrovnik, Dusseldorf, Eindhoven, Frankfurt, Goteborg, Hamburg, Hannover, Karlstad, Katowice, Köln, Košice, Kristianstad, Lamezia Terme, London, Munich, Norrkoping, Osijek, Oslo, Paris, Riga, Split, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Tallinn, Tel Aviv, and Warsaw.

Many flights are obviously seasonal, and the airlines which flew to Rijeka during the best of days are: Croatia Airlines, Norwegian Airlines, Air Baltic, Nordica, Arkia, Smart Planet Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Czech Airlines, Lot – Polish Airlines, Condor, Transavia, Trade Air, and Enter.

Currently, in April of 2022, there are several international regular flights from Rijeka: RyanAir operates to London, Brussels and Stockholm, Lufthansa has a connection to Frankfurt and Transavia to Eindhoven! There is also a regular national connection from Rijeka: twice weekly to Osijek and Dubrovnik, operated by Trade Air. Follow our dedicated Flights section on Total Croatia News to learn more about future plans, and we’ll update this article once the summer schedule becomes available.

The island of Krk, home to Rijeka Airport

The island of Krk is Croatia’s second largest in size, and it has a population of 17,000. It is very popular with Croats in continental Croatia, Zagreb in particular. This is because of its beauty, but perhaps more importantly, its accessibility. With the building of the bridge, Zagreb residents can now be on Krk in 2 hours, which makes it ideal for a weekend retreat. The main town is also called Krk, a delightful historic stone town on the water. And do not miss the local wine! Vrbnička Žlahtina is the local indigenous variety. You can learn more about the island of Krk from the tourist board website. For the latest news from Krk, follow the dedicated TCN page.

Passenger statistics at Rijeka Airport

rijeka airport statistics

As with all airports in Croatia in recent years, passenger traffic to Krk’s airport has increased significantly before 2020. This is demonstrated in the chart above, and more statistics are available.

History of Rijeka Airport

rijeka airport tito

The airport on Krk is actually the second to have served Rijeka. The first airport was built in 1930 on Grobnik Field, before the current one opened on May 2, 1970. Attempts to find a suitable location on the mainland failed, and so Krk was chosen. Tito and his wife were on the inaugural flight in a special presidential aircraft. You can read about the opening almost 50 years ago.

There were as many as five airlines flying to Brač at one point – Croatia Airlines, Czech Airlines, Adria, TUI and Luxair. You can find the most recent news in the TCN’s dedicated Flight section.

The airport has announced their flight schedule for the 2022 season, and you can find it at this link. There are connections to Zagreb and Bratislava (Croatia Airlines), Graz, Linz in Austria, Bergamo and Bolzano in Italy (operated by Luxwing).

As you can see from the statistics over the last 20 years or so, the turnaround of the airport’s passenger traffic before the pandemic is returning to – and exceeding – the numbers at the beginning of the century.

The next phase of expansion was scheduled to be completed by 2021. This will include a new terminal and the runway expanded to 2,400 metres. The runway will also be widened from the current 30m to 45m. It will therefore be able to handle three large aircraft at the same time. History of Brač Airport

brac airport terminal outside

Brač is the youngest commercial airport in Croatia. Initially conceived back in 1990 for tourism, sports and supply. It opened in 1992, with an initial runway which was just 1,200 metres long and 30 metres wide. It was then extended and a new passenger terminal appeared in 2007. While initially successful, the numbers declined sharply after 2001, and there was even talk of closing the airport altogether just a few years ago.

Thankfully, some increased investment, including from the company which has revitalised Bol (Bluesun Hotels and Stina winery are also in the portfolio), led to a change of fortune. The runway was extended to 1,760 metres, and it can now take Boeing 737-300 aircraft. As a result, 2018 saw a number of direct international flights from 6 countries. Investment are planned to continue (see above), with a runway of 2,400 metres planned to be in operation by 2021.

Getting to Lošinj Airport

The airport is located 13 km north-west of the main tourist settlement of Mali Lošinj and getting to it from any location is quite straightforward. If you’re coming from Mali Lošinj itself, the journey time is 15 minutes. If you are driving from Cres, simply cross the bridge onto Lošinj and follow the signs. It is impossible to get lost.

Who flies to Lošinj?

The airport on the island of Mali Lošinj was founded in 1985, mostly for recreational sport. It is still used for that today, as well as servicing private planes to the island’s luxury hotels. A commercial aspect to this has been added recently, and there was an increasing number of flights in the summer. Silver Air has partnered with Lošinj Hotels and used to offer flights to Zagreb, Pula and even Italy. Below is the 2018 timetable to give you an idea of what the airport’s heyday looked like.

History of the airport in Zadar

zadar airport history

Zadar has had international flights since 1936 when the former Italian airline Air Littoria flew to the former Dalmatian capital.

Today’s airport is located about 8km east of the city at Zemunik Donji and was opened in 1968. The airport proved a great addition to Zadar, handling over 150,000 passengers annually in 1976, for example. The Homeland War in the 1990s decimated life at the airport, and it has taken a long time for Zadar to recover.

As you can see from the lead photo, the airport taxiway crossed a public road, although this has been closed since 2010. The arrival of Ryanair in 2007 completely transformed Zadar’s fortunes. And once one budget carrier arrived, so too came others. 2019 was the biggest year in Zadar’s history, with more than 800,000 passengers – and almost 30% more than in the previous year, which held the record too.

dubrovnik airport to dubrovnik

The cheapest way to get from the airport to Dubrovnik is by local bus. Lines 11, 27 and 38 connect the two. The ticket price is 28 kuna. More info and the bus timetables here.

Airport Shuttle to the Old Town of Dubrovnik

A very convenient service to get you into the centre of town quickly and efficiently is the non-stop airport shuttle service. For 55 kuna, it takes the passengers between the Dubrovnik Airport and Dubrovnik main bus station in the Gruž Port. You can also purchase an open return ticket for 80 kuna. The bus also makes a stop at the Dubrovnik Cable Car station, just outside of the Old Town Dubrovnik. It does not pick up passengers at the Pile Gate any more, so don’t wait for it there. The service runs 7 days a week all year. You can buy tickets online. Journey time is about 40 minutes.

From the airport to Dubrovnik city centre by taxi and Uber

Taxis are readily available at the airport for transfers to the old town of Dubrovnik. The price is in the region of 250 kuna, although try and agree the price in advance. Alternatively, Uber is also available in the city, and ordering via the ride-sharing app will set you back 180 kuna.

How to get to and from the airport in Dubrovnik to Kotor and the rest of Montenegro

dubrovnik airport to kotor

Dubrovnik is in Croatia, but for tourists heading to Montenegro, the airport at that location has long been an attractive option.

The airport is located less than 30 minutes from the border with Montenegro, and the number of international flights make it a viable option for those planning a holiday in Montenegro. Some people understandably want to check out the country of Wild Beauty, with UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bay of Kotor, a top destination.

While the distance is not great, the main border crossing can be VERY busy in season. Be advised to take that into account when planning your trip. For a more in-depth look at visiting Montenegro from the Čilipi airport, here is a detailed TCN article on the subject which we wrote earlier.

From the airport in Dubrovnik to Split

Dubrovnik and Split are two of the most popular destinations in Croatia for tourists to visit, with many flying into one city and out of the other. But there is no scheduled transfer from the airport to Split, and you will have to either have to organise a private transfer (please contact us on news@total-croatia-news.com for more details) or head into the city centre of Dubrovnik and organise onward travel.

Helicopter transfers from Dubrovnik to Montenegro

dubovnik airport to kotor

Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian coast may have the elite reputation, but the big boats are mooring in neighbouring Montenegro. The arrival of Porto Montenegro and, more recently, The Chedi at Lustica Bay, has put Montenegro ahead of Croatia in terms of luxury tourism. That certainly holds true for the superyacht owners, who enjoy excellent facilities in the hands of Croatia’s southern neighbour.

Dubrovnik continues to be a huge draw for those tourists. The helicopter service from Tivat Airport is very busy in the high season, with its 15-minute transfer across the border to the airport in Dubrovnik. Tivat Airport is close to both Porto Montenegro and Lustica Bay. For more information, and to book, contact us at news@total-croatia-news.com

Flights to Dubrovnik – which airlines are coming?

dubrovnik-airport-flydubai

The traffic at the Dubrovnik Airport depends significantly on the season. During the winter, there are relatively few carriers flying to Dubrovnik. The number increases significantly during the high tourist season in the summer – of course, with the exception of the summer season of 2020. Last year was, understandbly, remarkably bad in terms of traffic and the number of carriers flying to Dubrovnik.

The Dubrovnik Airport website has the updated schedules available. Recently, the airport has announced their planned summer schedule (read more about it on TCN, download the full Summer of 2022 Flight Schedule in .pdf). The summer schedule is quite impressive and ambitious, linking Dubrovnik to over 70 airports in Europe and the world.

One BIG addition to the airport was the American Airlines, who started connecting the Pearl of the Adriatic with the United States with direct flights from Philadelphia in 2019. It was the first time Dubrovnik and the USA have been connected directly since the Homeland War. That connection has since been cancelled, but in the 2022 season, Dubrovnik will be connected to New York by United Airlines, several times a week.

To find out more about the flights to and from the Dubrovnik airport, check Skyscanner, the world’s most relevant source of flights information.

For the latest on flight news to Dubrovnik and the rest of Croatia, follow the designated TCN flights page.

Cheap Flights to Dubrovnik

jet2 at dubrovnik airport

After the national carrier, Croatia Airlines, Dubrovnik used to belong to easyJet, who used to be the number 2 airline at the airport in terms of passenger traffic. They were followed by Jet2 and Vueling, and there are several low-cost carriers in the top 10 (see below).

One interesting addition was Ryanair, who announced in December 2018 that they would be commencing operations in Dubrovnik with flights from Dublin in June 2019. After many years of discussions and a full decade after the Irish carrier put Zadar on the map, they didn’t have a long run at the airport before the pandemic hit.

In 2022, there will be several budget airlines operating at the Dubrovnik airport, including Ryanair, EasyJet and Wizzair.

Are there still seaplanes from Dubrovnik?

dubrovnik airport seaplanes

There was an aviation revolution in Croatia on August 27, 2014, as the first scheduled seaplane operation in modern European aviation history took off from Resnik, close to Split Airport, arriving just 15 minutes later in Jelsa on the island of Hvar. An ambitious plan to connect Croatia’s Adriatic coast and islands included flights from the airport in Dubrovnik (some of the planes were amphibious) to destinations such as Korčula and downtown Split.

The service was discontinued in 2016, however, after the operator, European Coastal Airlines, was grounded. There have been rumours of new companies entering the Croatian seaplane market, but nothing concrete at time of writing. In addition, TCN recently interviewed an industry expert on the viability of seaplanes in Croatia.

There are no hotels at the airport itself. However, if you prefer not to take a transfer from the city centre, the closest hotel option is the 3-star Hotel Konavle in Čilipi. It is located just 2km from the airport.

What is the airport code for Dubrovnik?

The airport code for Dubrovnik is DBV.

Airport facilities at Dubrovnik – food, shopping, changing money

dubrovnik airport shopping

Dubrovnik is not the best-equipped airport in the world for food, shopping and other facilities, but it covers the basics – cafes, duty-free, newsagents, money exchange services and OTP bank. In early 2021, the strict pandemic-management rules are enforced at the airport. That means that you will have to have your masks on at all times in the terminal building, maintain distance and the cafes will be closed or just giving you food and/or beverages to-go.

Airport Map of Dubrovnik

Flying to Dubrovnik – the bura wind

One of the disadvantages of the airport in Dubrovnik, particularly during winter, is its susceptibility to the famous strong northern wind of Dalmatia – the bura. When the bura blows, life changes, and while I personally love it and happily walk around in t-shirt to blow away the cobwebs, life comes to a halt for many.

That includes the Dubrovnik airport, which is affected by the strong Northern winds. The most notable and the most tragic example of the mayhem bura can create at the airport happened on April 3rd, 1996, when an aircraft carrying the United States Secretary of Commerce, Ron Brown and 34 more passengers crashed just before landing, killing all 35 of them (you can read more about that in an article on TCN). Because of the danger bura poses, it is not an uncommon occurrence for flights to be either cancelled or diverted to Split. Check the weather before flying and prepare yourself accordingly.

How many airline passengers pass through Dubrovnik?

dubrovnik airport statistics

The latest statistics from the airport show both the seasonality of traffic, as well as the rapid growth of passenger traffic.

For true stats geeks, here are the numbers from 1962, and you can see the devastating effect of the Homeland War, how well Dubrovnik recovered and what the current pandemic has done to the traffic.

Expansion of the airport in Dubrovnik

dubrovnik airport expansion

The openings of the new runway in 2019 and of the new terminal at Dubrovnik in 2017 are the two major latest developments of an airport which is undoubtedly showing the ambition to match the quality of the destination it serves. Currently, all other plans have been halted for further improvements or expansions of the airport, but follow the TCN dedicated page for any news.

History of the airports of Dubrovnik

The current airport is located in the Konavle region, close to the village of Čilipi, some 20km from the centre of Dubrovnik, and 6km from another popular destination – Cavtat. But it is not the first airport for the city. That accolade goes to Gruda, closer to Montenegro, where the first airport was built in 1936.

Construction on the Čilipi airport started in 1960, and commercial operations began in 1962. The airport gradually expanded until it was occupied, plundered and devastated by the Yugoslav army in 1991.

Reconstruction and recovery have been impressive and the new terminal building opened in 2017.  In the same year, Dubrovnik subsequently handled more than 2 million passengers for the first time in history. This number was soon surpassed in 2018. With ongoing expansion, the sky is literally the limit.

Cave under Dubrovnik’s airport

cave under dubrovnik airport

And you thought everything of interest at the airport was above ground…

Under the runway and apron is Đurovića Cave, located under Močići village, which is also part of the airport these days. The cave is 199m long and was regularly visited until the 1960s, when construction of the airport began. It is currently (temporarily) closed due to the ‘Dubrovnik Airport Development Project’.

Travelling through Split Airport? Get to know the new passenger terminal of the Split Airport, opened in 2019, from buses from Split, taxi prices, private transfers, parking, flights, and will you make the ferry?

COVID-19 Testing at Split Airport

It is possible to get tested for COVID-19 at Split Airport. Both PCR and antigen rapid tests are available, TCN reports.

Getting from Split Airport to Split – bus transfers

There are two bus options to ferry passengers between the airport and the city:

  • The airport bus shuttle operated by Pleso Prijevoz. Travel time is advertised as 30 minutes, and the cost is 30 kuna. You can see the departure times from Split Bus Station (platform one). Here is the timetable from the airport to Split Bus Station (which is right next to both the train station and the ferry). The shuttle is located right at the exit of the airport terminal, and you can buy tickets from the driver or online. Contact details – +385 21 2031190 split@plesoprijevoz.hr. The bus usually does not leave until it is full, which can be frustrating, especially for those looking to make the last ferry.
  •  You can also choose local buses No. 37 (Split – Trogir; Trogir – Split) and No. 38 (Split Airport – Kaštel Stari – Split; Split – Kaštel Stari – Split Airport). The buses pick up and drop off in Split at the local bus station Sukoišan, and on the main road outside of the airport terminal. You should plan at least an hour for each journey. Tickets can be purchased on the bus (with cash or coins) or at any Tisak counter. Ticket prices are 17 kuna.

Taxi and Uber from Split Airport

An overview of taxi prices as we found them. Always agree the price before you get in the taxi.

Cammeo (021 313 313): Fixed price of 190 kuna (peak season)

Radio Taxi Split (021 473 737): Radio Taxi said that the price is about 180 kuna for Croatians, but for foreigners – 280 kuna. The 280 kuna price is on their website as part of their summer price list, while the winter price to the airport is 180 kuna

Uber (mobile application): Prices between Split and Split Airport range between 225 and 270 kuna in peak season, and in winter between 120 and 160 kuna. Pro tip: Uber is also considerably cheaper if you take it from a road by the airport!

You can find taxis parked immediately upon exiting the airport, and the major taxi stands in the center of Split at Prokurative, Terminal F, the main Split bus station, and Prima 3 by HNK.

Driving to Split Airport

split airport drive to split

The drive to the airport from Split has become a lot less stressful since the upgrade on the road between the two was completed last year. On a clear day, the 24km drive from the ferry will take you about 30 minutes. Plan more time than this, especially in peak season. If you are coming along the motorway from the north, exit at Prgomet, following the signs for Trogir. You will go through some hilly terrain, but it will be a lot quicker than taking the Split exit and then going back on yourself.

Parking at Split Airport

Ever since the completion of the new terminal of the Split Airport in July of 2019, the normal prices for parking started applying. These include a free 15 minutes to drop off your loved one (you’re not allowed to leave your car), followed by 20 kuna an hour for the every next hour of parking started. For a full breakdown of parking prices, check the airport parking page.

Who flies to Split?

The Split Airport is an extremely seasonal airport, with a huge difference in the number of airlines operating from Split between the summer, high-tourist season and the slow, winter season. At the best of times for the airport, there were around 50 airlines flying to Split see the list below. A lot of these carriers work seasonally, although that season is getting longer. Additionally, with the problems the tourism has suffered due to the pandemic, currently the list is even shorter than what you’d expect: in February and early March of 2021 only Croatia Airlines and Trade Air operate there, with the exception of Eurowings flying to Düsseldorf once weekly.

Which destinations connect with Split?

split-airport-flight-radar-24

Split used to be connected to over 100 destinations during the summer, as it saw a huge increase in the final years before the pandemic hit, as the airport has crashed through the 3 million passenger mark. Currently, the number is much lower, but it will gradually increase as the companies pick up on taking tourists to Dalmatia. There is no destination route map on the airport website, but Flight Radar 24 have a very cool service, showing all the upcoming routes over the next 7 days. This was written during those quiet times, but check out the site for the latest information – it will soon be very busy again.

Airport car rental in Split

As you would expect with such a busy airport, the car rental business is very competitive. There are no less than 14 rent a car companies in the Split terminal. The airport website has the full list. Check the prices and the availability on the Tripadvisor site.

From the airport to the islands – will I make the ferry?

One of the great stresses of arriving in Split in the evening for many tourists is whether or not they will make the last ferry to their island of choice. After years of living on Hvar, with its last ferry at 20:30, I have heard of many tourists spending an impromptu first night in Split, as there was not enough time to get to the ferry from the airport.

So, will you make it? My experience is that if you are on the bus and heading into Split with 45 minutes left, you have a fighting chance of making it. Any less time, and you can forget it, unless you throw money at a taxi driver and ask him to drive like hell.

The things don’t seem to have drastically improved with the new terminal opening in 2019, but many tourists have been frustrated by the time it takes to get through passport control and baggage reclaim. All I can say is that there are no guarantees, and I wish you luck. But, having said that, there are worse places in the world to be marooned than Split. Maybe just one piece of advice for tourists: you’re on vacation, in Dalmatia. You’re supposed to take things slow, to allow yourself to breathe and enjoy. Take the stress out of your first night, spend the night in Split, enjoy the town itself and continue on to your next destination rested and without worrying about whether you’d make it and the disappointment of not making it.

An overview of facilities at the airport in Split

The new passenger terminal at the Split airport has a fair amount of facilities, and the maps of the three floors available to the public give an overview of what is available and where. You can see the fully interactive map on the airport’s site.

Hotels near the airport in Split

There are no hotels at the airport, but there are plenty of options in Split itself, as well as in Trogir. The old town of Trogir is a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site, located just 10 minutes from the airport.

From Split Airport to Trogir

Take the local 37 bus to Trogir from the airport. The bus will pick up on the main road outside of the airport terminal. You can find the bus schedule here.  A taxi from the airport to Trogir will cost around 100 kuna.

What is the airport code for Split?

The airport code for Split is SPU (LDSP).

Do seaplanes still fly from Split?

On August 27, 2014, modern European aviation history was made at Resnik, just down the road from the airport. European Coastal Airlines took off in a Twin Otter from the nearby bay, arriving in Jelsa 15 minutes later. The flight was the first scheduled seaplane flight in modern European history.

The seaplanes were a popular choice with tourists, and they also landed at the airport with their amphibious aircraft. Sadly, the service is no longer offered, and the company is not operational in Croatia any more. Will seaplanes fly again in Split? There have been many rumours, but nothing concrete. Here is what an aviation expert had to say about the future of seaplanes in Croatia

And still they keep on coming… The growth of passenger traffic through the airport has been phenomenal, with Split breaking through the 3 million passenger barrier in 2018, almost exactly double the traffic just five years ago. And with the new passenger terminal set to open in July 2019, who knows how this chart will look in another five years (this last sentence was written in late 2018, and it really hit a nail on the head: there’s no telling what the next five years will bring us!).

History of the airport in Split

split airport runway

The first airport to service Split way back in 1931 still exists today. The grass airfield in Sinj connected the city to Zagreb, Belgrade, Rijeka and Sarajevo. Interestingly, Split also has a seaplane station at Divulje back then, long before the arrival of European Coastal Airlines.

The airport was relocated to its current location of Resnik in the 1960s, and it opened in November 1966. The planned capacity of 150,000 was quickly shown to be too conservative, as there were 235,000 passengers just three years later.

A new terminal was constructed and opened in 1979 to coincide with the 8th Mediterranean Games, which were held in the same year. Split broke the 1.5 million passenger barrier in 1987, but disaster was about to strike. The Homeland War from 1991-95 reduced the airport to servicing NATO and UN cargo planes. It was not until 2008 that the 1.5 million passenger mark was broken again.

The terminal got a big facelift once more in 2005, but the biggest upgrade of all happened in July 2019. The opening of the new terminal helped Split cope with the massive increase in traffic, which exceeded 3 million passengers a year before the pandemic – and hopefully will again soon!

All you need to know about the Zagreb Airport at Pleso – arrivals, departures, parking, transfers, shopping and facilities, and some rather embarrassing signs for an international airport.

Arriving in Zagreb has become a lot more comfortable with the opening of the much-anticipated new airport terminal in Pleso, which was named after the late President Franjo Tudjman. Additionally, the futuristic design is certainly a big improvement on the old airport terminal. Here is what you also need to know about reaching and using the airport of Zagreb, which can and has handled over 3 million passengers a year.

COVID-19 Testing at Zagreb Airport

It is possible to get tested for COVID-19 at Zagreb Airport. Both the PCR and rapid antigen tests are offered. Find out more on the airport website.

What’s with all the names?

The official airport code for Zagreb is ZAG. There is another code, however, which is often used in connection with the airport – MZLZ – this stands for the name of the company operating the airport -Međunarodna zračna luka Zagreb d.d., which translates as the International Airport of Zagreb. The official name, as we already mentioned, is “Franjo Tuđman Airport”, but you will often hear the locals calling the airport “Pleso”, after the village where it’s located.

How to get to Zagreb Airport from Zagreb city centre – Pleso Prijevoz

If you are looking for a comparatively cheap way to get to Zagreb city centre from the airport, look no further than the bus shuttle service called Pleso Prijevoz. The ride takes about 40 minutes to the main Zagreb bus station, which is generally pretty central and just a short walk from the train station and centre, and tickets cost 40 kuna one way. The timetable allegedly follows through with the flight schedule, and you can learn more about the shuttle timetable on the official website. Tickets can be bought through the driver.

In addition to that option, it might be even cheaper (10 kuna) with the new 290 bus service between Velika Gorica and Zagreb Kvaternik Square, which started last year. The journey to the centre takes about 1 hour 15 mins, with some 16 stops altogether. Moreoever, it starts VERY early in the morning (04:20) and you can check out the timetable here (opens a .pdf document).

Driving to Zagreb Airport

The new airport terminal is situated about 17km south of the city centre, close to the town of Velika Gorica, and it is not far from the motorway south of the city which links all corners of Croatia. Driving time with no traffic is less than 30 minutes, but you are advised to plan for some delays to be safe.

Taxis at Zagreb Airport: a Warning and the Uber Option

What to say? Above all, be VERY careful with taxis from the airport in Zagreb. Only licensed taxi drivers from nearby Velika Gorica are allowed to park at the airport, a privilege they seem to enjoy taking advantage of as a result, with MUCH higher prices from the airport than to it from the centre. How much more then? It really depends, however, and I heard one story which perhaps sums it up best. A businessman ordered an Uber from a hotel in central Zagreb to the airport. Upon being charged 90 kuna for the ride, he handed over a 1000 kuna note, expecting to get 100 back. After a while, he understood that the price was 90 and not 900 as he has thought:

“How can it be 90 to the airport then, when I was charged 800 from the airport to my hotel in Zagreb?”

While this is surely an extreme example, prices of 200 – 300 kuna are common. You can always order an Uber via the application regardless, and the days of physical attacks on Uber drivers by Zagreb taxi drivers seem to be over.

Zagreb Airport Parking – What You Need to Know

Parking at Franjo Tudjman International Airport is not particularly cheap, according to the rates published on the airport website:

Categories (stay time) Rates (HRK)
Up to 10 minutes FREE
Up to 1 hour 27 HRK
2 hours 47 HRK
3 hours 70 HRK
From 3 to 6 hours 78 HRK

From 12 to 24 hours 150 HRK
From 24 to 48 hours 210 HRK
From 3rd to 5th day each day additionally 72 HRK
From 6th day each day additionally 68 HRK

If you are quick, however, there is a Kiss and Fly drop-off option directly at the passenger terminal. For more information on all the parking options and fine print, visit the parking section of the official website.

Rent a car Zagreb Airport options

As one would expect, there is a large choice of car rental companies, all of which have a presence in the arrivals hall. Here is the full list (keep in mind that this is the pre-pandemic list, and that it’s possible that some of the providers might have scaled back their operations);

Active, Alamo, National, Enterprise, AutoRent, Avant, Avis & Budget, Car-rental.hr, CARWIZ, Dollar & Thrifty, Europcar, Fleet, Goldcar & Rhodium, Hertz, Last Minute, M.A.C.K., Nova & Right cars, Oryx, Ride Car + Filipović (2 different operators at one desk), SIXT, UniRent. Tripadvisor has a nice overview of the options for car rental at the Zagreb airport.

Zagreb Airport Runway

Rijeka to Zagreb Airport Direct Shuttle

There is also another Pleso Prijevoz bus shuttle in addition to the one to Zagreb city centre – a direct service to the centre of Rijeka. The trip costs 150 kuna one way (250 return), with tickets available online no later than 24 hours prior to departure. The shuttle leaves Rijeka’s Jelačić Square at 05:00, returning at 15:30. For more information and to book, visit the Pleso Prijevoz website.

Flights to Zagreb – Which Airlines Fly to Pleso?

Here is a list of the airlines which used to fly into Zagreb before the pandemic:

Air Canada Rouge, Aeroflot, Aegean Airlines, Air France, Eurowings, Air Serbia, Emirates, Air Transat, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Czech Airlines, EL AL Israel Airlines, Iberia, KLM, Korean Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Norwegian, Qatar Airways, Sun d’Or, Swiss, Trade Air, Turkish Airlines, Vueling.

Currently, the number of flights is greatly reduced. As the tourist season gets closer and the pandemic is put under control, there will be more and more flights and airlines flying to the Zagreb Airport.

Find out more about flights to and from Zagreb Airport from Skyscanner, the world’s leading flight reservation platform.

Zagreb Airport Arrivals

Want to keep an eye on plane arrivals? You can keep track of live arrivals here. In addition, below a map of the arrivals area.

Zagreb Airport Departures

Check-in times for international departures are two hours before the flight and 90 minutes for domestic departures.  Live departures are available on the airport website and there is also a map of the airport departures hall above. If you are on a connecting flight, you will need a minimum of 40 minutes.

Zagreb Airport Emirates

Doha, Seoul, Dubai, Toronto, But Where are the Cheap Flights to Zagreb Airport?

There has been a welcome increase in inter-continental flights to Zagreb after the terminal was opened, which was somewhat halted by the pandemic. Firstly, Qatar Airways started to offer excellent daily connections to Doha and the world. Qatar has been followed by Emirates/Flydubai from Dubai, Transat from Toronto (summer only) and Korean Air, which launched their flights as a result of the surge in demand from Seoul. In addition, rumours and discussions about connections from China and the United States would be excellent additions if they came to pass.

And yet, for all the improving connections from afar, there are very few cheap flights to Zagreb from the European budget carriers. This is partly due to the higher prices of operating at Zagreb Airport, as well as perhaps an attempt to protect Croatia Airlines from cheap competition. It is in stark comparison with nearby Budapest, for instance, whose fortunes have been transformed since Hungarian national carrier ceased operating in 2012. If you are interested in this topic, TCN recently had a fascinating interview with Jost Lammers, CEO of Budapest Airport.

Internal Flights from Zagreb Airport to Dubrovnik, Split, Pula, Zadar and Osijek

Zagreb Airport Trade Air

Croatia Airlines, the national carrier, operates a number of internal flights within Croatia, but the network is not as comprehensive as one might expect, especially out of season. It is also debatable what the financial or time savings are flying from Zagreb to Split Airport, for example, once you take travel to and from both airports and check-in times are taken into account. For the latest Croatia Airlines schedule, visit their official website.

One other Croatian airline also worth checking out is Trade Air from Osijek, which operates a number of internal flights.  This includes one from Split to Dubrovnik, but not from Dubrovnik to Split… The only current Zagreb connection is Osijek, but this could change. You can find their latest schedule here.

Are There Hotels at Zagreb Airport?

There are no hotels at the airport, but several in nearby Velika Gorica. With Zagreb so close, there is no real need to stay in Velika Gorica, but if that is your plan, the 4-star Hotel Royal Airport is probably your best bet, some 4km from the airport.

Zagreb Airport Transfer Options to Split, Dubrovnik and Elsewhere

Apart from the Pleso Prijevoz connection to Zagreb city centre and one to Rijeka mentioned above, there are no official transfer options directly from the airport, and a trip into Zagreb will be required as a result.

Looking for a fast, reliable and trouble-free transfer to or from Zagreb Airport? Contact TC transfer partner Adriatic Transfers for your one-stop solution.

Checking in at Zagreb Airport

Check-in for international flights is at least 2 hours before departure, 90 minutes for domestic flights. You can check in online, and there are self-check-in services offered by four airlines, for instance – Croatia Airlines, Air Canada, Air France, KLM and Korean Air.

Facilities at Zagreb Airport – Shopping, Wi-Fi and Restaurants

Finally, Start Browsing: You are connected :)”

No smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is permitted in public parts of the airports, although there are designated smoking areas.

There is a prayer room available, as well as baby-care facilities.

THOSE Zagreb Airport Signs – Toilets Disabled

As TCN reported at the time, the new airport terminal opened in March 2017, a major upgrade on the old Pleso airport. It didn’t take long for some people to question some of the work done, however, particularly with the translation of the signs. ‘Toilet Disabled’, which literally means the toilet has been taken out of use, made national headlines as a result. After spending 300 million euro on the terminal, was someone also trying to save money with Google Translate, or employ a non-English-speaking cousin? Despite the outcry at the time, here is one of the signs more than 3 years later, in October 2020.

It was not the only issue with the signage at the airport, however, as it seemed that the MZLZ logo had been taken from a free Internet site and simply (but expensively) had the colours changed. Read more about that here.

A Brief History of Zagreb Airport

The current airport runway is actually the third in Zagreb’s history, with the first airstrip constructed in 1909 in Črnomerec, just 6 years after the infamous inaugural Wright brothers flight. Slavoljub Penkala, he who invented the pen, built an aircraft after that and conducted a test flight in June 1910.

It was followed by a new airport in the Borongaj neighbourhood from 1926 to 1962, and it played an important role as an airbase in the Second World War. The airport was bombed as a result and seriously damaged by the Allies.

The origins of today’s airport date back to the Germans in 1943, however, as the Nazis built an airstrip near the village of Pleso, which lies between Zagreb and Velika Gorica. After becoming a civilian airport, the first flight took place much later, in 1962. Since those humble beginnings of a 2.5km runway and platform which could handle five planes, Pleso Airport was continuously expanded and upgraded, culminating in the modern new terminal we have today.

Take a video tour of the new airport terminal in the video below, for instance,  through the eyes of a passenger flying out to Barcelona shortly after it opened in March 2017.
